Is Liftoff free?

Short answer: yes, you can log your training in Liftoff without paying. The part people are usually really asking about, the rankings and scores that make Liftoff different from every other tracker, sits behind Liftoff Pro. This page sets out where the line is drawn, what Pro costs on the US App Store, and how to tell whether you are the sort of lifter it is worth it for.

The direct answer

  • Logging is free. You can record workouts in Liftoff without a subscription.
  • The ranked features are gated. Liftoff Pro is what unlocks the competitive layer the app is built around.
  • Pro costs $12.99 a month, or between $39.99 and $79.99 a year depending on which plan you are offered, because the app runs more than one live annual price.
  • Liftoff holds 4.83 stars from 89,162 US ratings, so this is a mature, well-liked app either way.
  • The honest catch: using Liftoff free means using it as an ordinary logger, and there are ordinary loggers that cost less or nothing.

SayLift logs your whole workout from one spoken sentence. iPhone only, 873 exercises built in, 3 days free then $49.99 a year.

What you are actually paying for

Liftoff's whole idea is that your lifts get scored and placed against everybody else's. That scoring is the reason the app exists and the reason people stay in it. So the free tier is best understood as a preview: it will record your training perfectly well, but it withholds the thing that makes Liftoff Liftoff.

This means the value question is unusually clean. If a ranking makes you train harder, Pro is cheap. If it doesn't, you should not be paying $12.99 a month for a logger, and you probably should not be using Liftoff at all. That is no criticism of the app; you would simply be using 40% of something built around the other 60%.

Be honest with yourself using evidence rather than intention. Have you ever trained harder for more than two weeks because of a leaderboard? If the answer is no, that is your answer.

The free options if you decide against Pro

If you want to log for free and skip the competitive layer entirely, the two obvious routes are a cheap established tracker or a free one.

Hevy is the cheap established route: $2.99 a month or $23.99 a year, with a free tier that allows 4 routines, 7 custom exercises and 3 months of graph history. Strong is $4.99 a month or $29.99 a year, with a free tier that logs unlimited workouts but caps you at 3 custom routines.

SayLift is the private route rather than the free one: unlimited logging, an AI coach that sets your next working weight, a progress dashboard with personal records, 873 exercises with instructions and photos that work offline, voice logging and cloud backup, with no leaderboard anywhere. It is a subscription, $49.99 a year after a 3-day trial, so it undercuts Liftoff Pro on price but it is not free the way Liftoff's logger is.

Where SayLift is the wrong answer. It has no rankings or leaderboard, and no social features of any kind, so it replaces nothing about why you were looking at Liftoff. It is iPhone-only, and it has no App Store ratings yet against Liftoff's 89,162.

Frequently asked questions

Is Liftoff free to use?

Yes, for logging. You can record your workouts in Liftoff without paying anything. The ranked and competitive features, which are the reason most people choose Liftoff over a plain tracker, require Liftoff Pro.

How much does Liftoff Pro cost?

$12.99 a month, or between $39.99 and $79.99 a year depending on which plan you are shown, on the US App Store as of 9 August 2026. The app runs more than one live annual price, so what you see may differ from what a friend sees.

What do you lose on the free version of Liftoff?

The ranked features. Free Liftoff works as a straightforward workout logger; Pro is what turns it into the competitive app it is known for. If you never intend to use the rankings, you are better served by a cheaper or free tracker.

Is there a free alternative to Liftoff?

SayLift is not free: it costs $49.99 a year after a 3-day trial, with no free tier. What you get is unlimited workouts, an AI coach that sets your next weight, personal records, offline exercise guides, voice logging and cloud backup, for less than Liftoff Pro. It has no rankings or social layer at all, though, so it does not replace what Liftoff is for. If you want to pay nothing, Liftoff's own logger and Hevy's free tier are the options, the latter capped at 4 routines and 3 months of graph history.

Is Liftoff worth paying for?

It is if competition is what gets you to the gym. The ranking is a real feature, and 89,162 ratings at 4.83 stars say it works for a lot of people. If a leaderboard has never changed how you train, $12.99 a month for a logger is poor value and almost any other app on this site is a better fit.
