Workout apps with an iPhone widget, and what each widget actually does
Most gym apps now have a Home Screen widget. What they do when you tap them is where they differ. Some show a streak or a weekly count and open the app. A few start a workout. This page compares the widgets in SayLift, Hevy, JEFIT, Fitbod, Strong and Liftoff, using only what each app says on its own App Store page and website, checked on 2 October 2026. This site is run by the people who make SayLift.

The short answer
Ranked on one question: how quickly does the widget get your workout recorded?
- SayLift: widgets on the Home Screen, the Lock Screen and in Control Center, and every one of them opens straight into voice recording. Tap, say the session, save.
- Hevy: Home Screen widgets for your week, calendar, streak and the day's routines. Tapping a routine starts it as a live workout.
- JEFIT: Weekly Streak and Monthly Progress widgets. Its store page says a widget can take you straight into today's workout.
- Fitbod: a small or medium widget with workouts this week, your weekly goal and your next workout.
- Strong: one widget, Workouts per Week.
- Liftoff: rank and streak widgets.
SayLift logs your whole workout from one spoken sentence. iPhone only, 873 exercises built in, 3 days free then $4.17 a month, billed $49.99 a year.
Start the free trialTwo kinds of workout widget
Readers searching for a "workout widget" usually want one of two things, and most apps only build one.
A widget that shows you something. A streak, a weekly count, a calendar of the days you trained. It is a reminder on your Home Screen. Tapping it opens the app, and you take it from there.
A widget that does something. Tapping it starts recording the workout. This is the kind that saves time in the gym, because the slow part of any tracker is getting from a locked phone to the screen where you enter a set.
A third thing gets mixed up with widgets: the Live Activity, the rest timer some apps show on the Lock Screen and in the Dynamic Island while a workout is running. It only appears once you have started a workout in the app.

#1 SayLift: every widget starts a voice log
SayLift is our app, and its widgets were built for one job: getting a workout recorded from wherever your phone is.
On the Home Screen, the small and medium widgets show your next training day, such as "Push" or "Day 2 of 4" if you follow a program, how many movements it has, and your last session. Once you have logged something today, they switch to what you did today. A "Log" button sits on every one, and tapping anywhere on the widget opens SayLift already recording.
On the Lock Screen, there are three styles: a round microphone button, a rectangle with your next session, and a single line of text above the clock. Tap any of them, unlock with Face ID, and SayLift opens already recording.
In Control Center, on iOS 18 or later, a "Log a Workout" button does the same. You can also put it on the Action button of an iPhone 15 Pro or later.
Then you talk. Say the session the way you would tell a friend, for example "bench three sets of eight at 135, then rows, ten, ten and eight at 60", and SayLift writes every exercise, set, rep and weight onto a review screen. Check it, save it, and the coach sets your weights for next time.
#2 Hevy: the most widget designs
Hevy has the widest choice of Home Screen widgets: the last seven days of workout data, a calendar, a calendar with data, the routines planned for the day of the week, a weekly streak and custom totals. Tapping a routine in the widget starts it as a live workout, which you then log set by set by tapping in the app.
Hevy's own pages describe its Lock Screen presence as a Live Activity during a workout, not as a Lock Screen widget you place yourself.
#3 JEFIT: streaks and monthly totals
JEFIT added Weekly Streak and Monthly Progress widgets in October 2025. Monthly Progress shows streak days, volume and duration. Its App Store description says you can "add a widget to jump straight into today's workout". It does not say whether that opens the workout or starts logging it.
#4 Fitbod: next workout at a glance
Fitbod's widget comes in small and medium sizes and shows workouts completed this week, your weekly goal, and details of your next workout. Fitbod's help center does not describe what tapping the widget does.
#5 Strong and #6 Liftoff: one number each
Strong offers one widget, Workouts per Week, a count of your training days. Liftoff offers rank and streak widgets, which suit its ranking system. Neither app's own pages say the widget starts a workout.
How to add a workout widget on iPhone
- Install the app and open it once, so the widget has data to show.
- Home Screen: touch and hold an empty area until the icons jiggle, tap Edit, then Add Widget. Search for the app, pick a size and tap Add Widget.
- Lock Screen: touch and hold the Lock Screen, tap Customize, choose Lock Screen, then tap the widget area under the clock and pick the app.
- Control Center (iOS 18 or later): swipe down from the top right, touch and hold an empty space, tap Add a Control, and search for the app.
- Test it in the gym: lock the phone, then time how long it takes from the widget to a recorded set. That number is the one that matters.
How to pick
- You want the widget to record the workout for you: SayLift. Tap the widget, speak the session, save.
- You want a reminder of your streak or weekly count: any of these apps has one.
- You want to start logging from the Lock Screen or Control Center, not just the Home Screen: SayLift is the only app here whose own pages describe that.
Who SayLift is for
SayLift is for iPhone lifters who would rather not type sets between sets. Put the widget on your Lock Screen, tap it when you finish training, and say what you did. The AI writes it down, the coach picks your next weights, and 873 exercises with instructions and photos are in the app, offline.
It costs $4.17 a month (billed $49.99 a year), $7.99 a month or $3.99 a week after a 3-day free trial. Get SayLift on the App Store.
Frequently asked questions
Which workout app has the best iPhone widget?
It depends on what you want the widget to do. SayLift's widgets on the Home Screen, Lock Screen and Control Center all open straight into voice recording, so you can log a session in one tap. Hevy has the most Home Screen designs, including a calendar, streak and the day's routines, and tapping a routine starts it.
Is there a workout tracker with a Lock Screen widget?
Yes. SayLift has three Lock Screen widget styles, a round microphone button, a rectangle showing your next session and a line of text, and each one starts a voice log. Several other apps show a rest timer on the Lock Screen as a Live Activity, but only while a workout is already running.
Can a widget start a workout?
In some apps. Tapping a routine in Hevy's widget starts it as a live workout. Tapping any SayLift widget opens the app already recording, so you can say the whole session. Most other workout widgets show information and open the app.
Does Hevy have a widget?
Yes. Hevy's Home Screen widgets show the last seven days of workout data, a calendar, the routines planned for the day, a weekly streak and custom totals. Tapping a routine in the widget starts it as a live workout.
Does SayLift have a widget?
Yes. SayLift has small and medium Home Screen widgets showing your next training day and last session, three Lock Screen styles, and a Log a Workout button for Control Center on iOS 18. Every one of them opens the app already recording a voice log.
How do I add a workout widget to my Lock Screen?
Touch and hold the Lock Screen, tap Customize, choose Lock Screen, then tap the widget area below the clock and pick your workout app from the list. Open the app at least once first so the widget has data.
Stop typing between sets
Say what you lifted. SayLift writes down every set, rep and weight, then tells you what to lift next time. iPhone only, 3 days free then $4.17 a month, billed $49.99 a year.
